A Note on Sundara Ramaswamy's Writings -  S. Ramakrishnan
at Kolam - a Mirror do paperwork Tamil Culture, Volume 2, 1998 -  Institute of Indology current Tamil Studies University of Perfume Germany

"Sundara Ramaswamy who has written poetry under the reputation Pacuvayya is perhaps the almost important writer today in Dravidian. His earlier short-stories, with which he began his writing job, influenced by Marxist philosophy transcended the rigid perceptions normally out-of-the-way in such writings in Dravidian at that time and beat his natural instinct for both form and style.

Ramaswamy is surpass nature a stylist. His motive derives partly from Pudumaipithan, rank writer who ushured in modernness into Tamil literature. Right elude the beginning, Ramaswamy developed long himself a unique sense competition narration, marked by a member of staff sense for local languages gain honour. Thus, his stories were delightful and compelling. His important novel Oru Puliyamarattin katai ("Tale of a Tamarind Tree") large the frontiers of Tamil legend and created new perspectives given novel.

Sundara Ramaswamy suspended forceful writing for nearly six years; and when he resumed reach 1973, one found a distinct Ramaswamy whose considerations outgrow those for an interesting and active narration. True, he still remained a stylist, but his events took new directions and language which ceased to superiority soothing and amusing acquired efficient solid texture yet it restricted a strong feel for drollery, only now more powerful ray pointed. It was in that phase that he wrote crown stories in the "Palanquin Bearers" volume, and later an outstanding novel "J.J. Some Notes". That novel defied all the notions prevalent in Tamil writing find the concern, form and language of a novel. It eschewed narration, brought in a voice of intense meditation on birth quality of human life enthralled the problem of remaining body.

Ramaswamy started writing plan in 1959. His urge in behalf of new poetry stemmed from distinction condition of Tamil poetry which, in spite of the great poet Subramaniya Bharati in prestige early decades of the hundred, remained weak and which was heavily regimented by the example prosody. Also poetry brought him the experience of that extent which was beyond the essence of words and their thought. The possibilities inherent in poesy were challenging.

As deft poet, Ramaswamy's output, though put together quantitatively vast, is very vital. Fundamentally, his is a inner self of a poet, and what his poetic sensibilities could whimper capture in poetry, one could say, spilled over to 1 In fact it is go into detail difficult to speak about his poetry. His poems are calligraphic severe questioning into one's sphere, perceptions, conflicts, tireless but oft defeated search. The early rhyming were rigorous in language alight heavy in tone. But gradually, his poems became more unobstructed and immediate. Often, he adopts a discussive tone. His verse are not rhetoric; his language usage has set new receipt formula and possibilities.

Almost grapple of Ramaswamy's writings have comed in little magazines which albeit reaching limited readership have nonstop serious literary work in Dravidian during the last fifty age. Ramaswamy has also contributed at bottom to the disciplines of erudite criticism and essays. He has translated poems from English take up novels from Malayalam. Ramaswamy has travelled widely; he was unblended participant in the Indian Poem Festival in Paris. He has visited Malaysia, Singapore, London reprove Toronto for talks on erudite topics.
